Wheels for Meals

Guess what I am doing tomorrow?!

I will be completing a metric century (62 miles) as part of the Wheels for Meals charity ride. The ride raises money for Meals on Wheels Greenville, an organization that delivers hot meals to homebound residents of Greenville who cannot prepare nutritious meals for themselves.

So I am riding 60+ miles. NBD, right? Why is this blogworthy news?

(It may not be, but humor me…)

Well, there are a couple of reasons:

  • I haven’t ridden further than 30 miles since February 25, when I rode 44 miles as part of a charity ride. I haven’t ridden further than that since my 70.3 in September.
  • Not only will I be riding 20 miles further than I have in months, but this is the course profile. There is about 4000 feet of climbing, including a nice, nasty one there in the middle. I am not afraid to climb, but again, reference the first bullet above.
  • I am going…dun, dun, dun…ALONE! What?! Yes, there will certainly be hundreds of other riders there, but I usually go to these types of events (or any rides for that matter) with at least one person from my group of riding buddies. This time my buddies are doing a different ride, are out of town, etc. So I signed up all by myself and I will go make new friends. I will. I am a super social person, but I am intimidated by these big cycling environments because I still consider myself somewhat of a rookie. Side note: I do know of at least 2 people doing the English Century (100 miler) but it starts an hour before the other rides so there is little likelihood I will run into them. And if you saw, my new Nuun HTC teammate, Katie’s, blog post yesterday, you know that Greenville is so I shouldn’t have any problems making friends, right?. (As long as I don’t make a fool of myself, at least.)
Actually despite above referenced freak-outs, I am pretty excited about tomorrow. My weekends have been so jampacked with travel and weddings that I have missed my long weekend rides. The route should be beautiful and I am looking forward to enjoying the scenery and pushing myself hard.
So if you want to find me tomorrow morning, me and my Nuun will be trekking up the mountains of SC/NC. I will be the only one with aero bars on my road bike, trying to convince random people to be my friend.
What’s everyone else doing this weekend?! Tell me about how you are going to suffer during your workouts tomorrow!

Um, yes- I think 62 miles is blog-worthy!! Wow- that ride is no joke. You are amazing- I have no doubt you’ll rock it and make some new friends! I’ll be in spinning certification for 8 hours Sat and 8 hours Sunday… I have no idea how much of that will be riding, but I’m prepping myself for an intense weekend!
