Dear Triathlon – An Open Letter

Dear Triathlon,

I am not sure exactly how to tell you this, but I need a break. We had a great summer of racing and B2B was the best race of my life, but I need some time away from you. Sure, I love you and your multi-sport habits, but since I have been with you, I am not getting enough of what I truly love. Running.

Yes, I will miss morning bike rides, chatting and laughing with the girls. And I will miss swimming outdoors on a sunny day. And I will miss being able to get on the podium in small races. And believe it or not, I will even miss the 14-hour training weeks that allow me to eat everything in sight without a guilty thought.

BUT, I will not miss all your equipment. I won’t miss lugging around a huge bag with bike shoes, a helmet, multiple water bottles, a tire pump, gloves, headbands, sunglasses, a bike computer, goggles, caps, fins, paddles, etc, etc, etc. I won’t miss the saddle sores, expensive bike repairs, goggle marks around my eyes and the constant chlorine stench. I won’t miss taking my bike on and off of the car every day and constantly fretting about it as I drive down the highway. I won’t miss holding back on my runs because I have a big bike ride afterward or the next day. And I certainly won’t miss flat tires or bike crashes.

Yes, I am in love with the 70.3 distance. And yes, I am (more than) a little curious to see if I can go sub-5:00. And of course, I will probably “use” swimming and biking for cross-training this winter and spring. Hell, we may even get back together for a few weekend flings next summer. But 2013 will not bring another 70.3. And it will definitely not bring a 140.6. (2014, maybe?)

2013 is the year of the marathon. It is the year that I will chase my 26.2 dreams and there is just no room for you in my life while I do that.

But trust me, it’s me, not you.

I know now, more than ever, that I will miss you, but don’t worry. I’ll be back.

  1. love this! and so, so true. this is exactly what i did at the end of last year. i decided i needed to get more serious about my running (and it was where my heart was) so i stopped tri training. i found myself riding so conservatively because i was paranoid about crashing and taking myself out of the running game. it was a good decision at the time and i’m sure it will be the same for you! i have no doubts you’ll crush 26.2 just as you crushed 70.3! happy friday and happy running! #gofasttakechances

Such a good post, Corey! During the off-season, I’m supposed to be focusing on swimming and biking, and I know I’m going to miss running on a regular basis. Glad to hear 2013 will be the year of the marathon for you! I know a few triathletes who had “normal” tri season and plan to run marathons within the upcoming weeks, but the really serious ones say their bodies are totally beat. I would love to combine triathlon and marathon training, but I don’t think it’s a feasible goal. Have you given any thought to which marathon you’ll do?

The funny thing about triathlon is that I don’t really feel beat up…in fact after swimming and biking so much, I usually feel healthier than ever…its just that I am kind of burnt out on all the logistics that it takes! And I miss running! Post coming Monday with my marathon plans 🙂

  3. Oooh, yay!! Back to running sounds good to me! Curious which ones you’re looking at…
